The First Garden Fountains

Towns and villages relied on working water fountains to funnel water for cooking, washing, and cleaning up from nearby sources like ponds, channels, or creeks. In the days before electric power, the spray of fountains was powered by gravity alone, commonly using an aqueduct or water resource located far away in the surrounding mountains. Inspiring and impressive, big water fountains have been built as memorials in nearly all cultures. Crude in design, the first water fountains did not appear much like modern-day fountains. Basic stone basins created from nearby rock were the original fountains, used for religious functions and drinking water. 2000 B.C. is when the earliest identified stone fountain basins were originally used. The spraying of water appearing from small jets was pressured by gravity, the only power source designers had in those days. Drinking water was delivered by public fountains, long before fountains became ornate public statues, as beautiful as they are functional. Beasts, Gods, and spectral figures dominated the initial ornate Roman fountains, starting to appear in about 6 B.C..
